Shuvalan on the Absheron map
Shuvalan is one of Baku's traditional Absheron villages and part of the Khazar district. It stretches along the Caspian coast east of Mardakan, linked to Mardakan and Qala by the Mardakan roundabout. The main route to the city runs through Mardakan to the airport highway, and the bus from Koroglu metro station continues through Mardakan to Shuvalan. The Mir Movsum Agha shrine
Shuvalan's best-known site is the Mir Movsum Agha shrine in the east of the settlement. Mir Movsum Agha (1883–1950) was known among residents of Baku and nearby villages as a man believed to have extraordinary abilities. The complex built over his grave welcomes visitors all year and is one of the much-visited places on the Absheron Peninsula.
Ancient traces and the settlement's character
Rock carvings from the Bronze and Early Iron Ages found in Shuvalan are now kept in the Museum of History of Azerbaijan. According to the older generation, the first residents came from the neighbouring village of Qala: the land was first used as pasture, and people later settled here for its greenery and milder winters. Today shops and trade make up most of Shuvalan's economy.
The coast, schools and daily life
Shuvalan's coast is well suited to the beach, and children's summer camps operate near the sea. The settlement has several secondary schools and a palace of culture, and the Shuvelan Park shopping centre is the nearest stop for everyday shopping.
