About Mardakan: location and neighbours
Mardakan lies on the eastern Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian coast and is regarded as the centre of the Khazar district — the district executive authority is based here. It is about 30 km from central Baku and about 10 km from Heydar Aliyev International Airport. It borders Shuvalan to the east, Qala to the south and Shagan to the west. Its population has grown quickly in recent years, making it one of the largest settlements in the district.
History and landmarks
Mardakan is one of the oldest settlements on the Absheron Peninsula. Its symbols are medieval fortresses: the Round Fortress, built in 1232 on the order of Shirvanshah Fariburz III, and the five-storey Quadrangular Fortress from the 14th century. The Mardakan Arboretum was founded in 1926; before that it was the private garden of oil industrialist Murtuza Mukhtarov, and today it preserves more than 700 plant species. The arboretum grounds hold the house-museum of the poet Sergei Yesenin, who lived here in 1924–1925, and the settlement also has the 15th-century Tuba Shahi Mosque.
A tradition of country houses
The tradition of building country houses in Mardakan goes back to the 19th century, when oil industrialists built summer residences here; Zeynalabdin Taghiyev's summer house is also in the settlement. In Soviet times Mardakan was known for its sanatoriums and dachas. Today new houses in a contemporary style are replacing old Absheron dachas, and land has become more expensive as free plots grow scarce.
Daily life and transport
The settlement has secondary schools, kindergartens, shops and services, so Mardakan is chosen not only for summer but for year-round living. The main link to the city is the airport highway, and a direct bus runs from Koroglu metro station to Mardakan. A cycle path and pavement run along the Buzovna–Mardakan road.
